Your holiday gift ideas are great for keeping us focused on exercising! One other thing I would add to the list is a Physioball (aka exercise ball) which would fall under "Gifts $25 or less". Thanks!

Walking with poles is a great way to turbo charge the average walking campaign. Ideally the poles used are one-piece poles (not cheap/flimsy 2-piece or 3-piece collapsible poles from China), sized properly and the correct technique is used.

At the American Nordic Walking System there are a variety of exertion levels to pick from - from casual (burning around 20% more calories than regular walking)) to intense (burning up to 40 more calories). There are also specific techniques for those suffer from joint pain and/or balance issues.

There is NO correct technique that suggests dragging the rubber tips behind you. When using he perfect length poles and the correct technique the poles help to automatically walk with a super straight back - better walking posture is biomechanically a good thing. This improved walking posture when combined with the unique 4-Wheel-Drive type action of walking with poles radically reduces the stress to the shins, knees, hips and back. Nordic Walking is low impact and yet provides a highly effective workout - burning more calories and working more muscle groups than regular walking.

Be sure to look for quality one-piece poles in the perfect length for your height. One-piece poles that are sized correctly prove to be safer, lighter and much more durable than collapsible and telescoping poles that tend to rattle, vibrate, gradually collapse or collapse unexpectedly all at once. Seniors and individuals should never use cheap/flimsy collapsible poles. Athletes also know that one-piece poles are tough enough to withstand their demands. Skiers know that one-piece poles are much more user-friendly and dependable.
